Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice or Microsoft Word file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Author Guidelines for the Journal of the Southern Association for the History of Medicine and Science

 

Authors are responsible for the following stylistic rules:

  1. All manuscripts should be in MS Word and single-spaced. Please do not use the tab key to indent.
  2. Recommended length of articles - 5,000 to 10,000 words. 
  3. Citations should be Chicago Style footnotes (not endnotes). See the Chicago Manual of Style quick guide here for more information: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide/citation-guide-1.html
  4. No bibliography is necessary
  5. Authors should use the series comma (or Oxford comma). Example: I like grapes, apples, and oranges.    [comma before “and”]
  6. Use American standard spelling
  7. Dates should be in the month, day, year format: April 1, 2007
  8. Long quotes of more than five lines should be indented, block quotes (single spaced). No quotation marks needed. 
  9. Spell out numbers less than 100 (except for dates or mathematical formulas or numbers used with a percentage sign, e.g., 5%)
  10. Permissions: It is the author’s responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce any third party material (images, graphs, etc…). In your cover letter, include a statement that your manuscript either does not include any copyrighted third party material, or that you have obtained permission to reproduce this material.
