Gaining Experience Using the Classification Method: A Job Evaluation Exercise
Keywords:
compensation, job evaluation, classification method, salary structure, job structure, experiential exerciseAbstract
This exercise enables students to practice the classification method of job evaluation. Students are assigned to a “classification committee” and are given five position descriptions to classify using The American Society of Civil Engineers’ Job Grading Standards. After individually classifying the positions, members of the classification committee arrive at a consensus for the classification of each position. Following classification, the committee establishes a salary range for the job structure using internet-based resources. This exercise is appropriate for graduate and undergraduate students studying human resource management and compensation management. A brief review of job evaluation and the classification method of job evaluation is provided along with a discussion of the exercise, teaching notes and exercise handouts.
